I have turned on access point on my phone(Xiaomi Redmi 6A), i verified that I can connect on non-linux devices. But my ubuntu(20.04) laptop doesn't find my network. After that I tried to find my network in airodump-ng
and found it on 13 channel with about 19 beacons in 9 minutes. Here is some useful info:

Network randomly reconnecting in file explorer with strange sound?
I am using the current version of Ubuntu 16.04 (have to use it for reasons). After changing mainboard, CPU and RAM I have the following problem (everything else works fine):Every now and then there is a strange sound from the speakers by chance. At the same moment the entries "Network" and all SMB-shares disappear from the file explorer for an extremely short time.Does anyone have an idea what it could be and what I could investigate further? Thanks!
Ubuntu 20.04 Network Performance Extremely Slow
I just upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 on one of the Dell XPS 13 machines, and the network performance is abhorrent. Internet speed is very fast from a google speed test (>300Mb/s for both upload and download).
However, whenever I try to browse a website or even run sudo apt update
the connection will often time out. My internet is very fast on all other devices and I really don't know how to debug this problem.
sudo lshw -class network -short && nmcli device status
shows

Solution:
It seems like this is a pretty common problem, and one without a definitive cause. For me, it was because Ubuntu resets the TLP configuration, and the power management went back to "on". I disabled Wi-Fi power management directly by editing:
sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Then changed the value from 3 to 2, saved changes and rebooted.
I actually got this solution from Reddit and this worked for my case specifically but it seems like it could be caused by a bunch of other things. Read all the proposed solutions below!
ufw firewall - root user can curl url but cant do apt-get update
I am using ufw to block all outgoing traffic by default. I am then opening up 53 to aws resolver to do dns lookups. and then in /etc/ufw/before.rules I am using:
-A ufw-before-output -p tcp -m multiport --dports 80,443 -m owner --uid-owner root -j ACCEPT
This should allow root to connect out on 80 and 443 and it does via curl but for some reason apt-get update doesn't work?
I have not seen this before. Any ideas?
TIA
Problem with DNS with OpenVPN on Ubuntu 20.04
I have installed the OpenVPN server and the Bind9 DNS server on the company server. The part of the server config is below. The important part is a pushing route and DHCP DNS option.
local 10.0.9.2port 1194proto udpdev tuntopology subnetserver 10.0.12.0 255.255.255.0ifconfig-pool-persist ipp.txtpush "route 10.0.9.0 255.255.255.0"push "dhcp-option DNS 10.0.9.2"
When connecting on Windows or Elementary OS, everything works great. Only traffic to the server is going through the VPN, the rest does not. If the client is forcing to pass all traffic through the VPN, the internet access works too. In both cases, when trying to access git.internal.mycompany.org
it gets DNS records from my Bind9 DNS server and connects correctly.
But this does not work in Ubuntu. When passing whole traffic through VPN, a record from DNS is taken. But when only server traffic goes through VPN, then DNS is not reached and I cannot access the git server via URL. When reaching via IP, it works.
I tried also to add to the client config this.
script-security 2up /etc/openvpn/update-systemd-resolveddown /etc/openvpn/update-systemd-resolved
But this does not help. Maybe because when I try to run the script directly, I got an error /etc/openvpn/update-systemd-resolved: řádek 404: dev: unbound variable
.
I don't know how to fix this. I tried to search here on AskUbuntu and others, but most suggest adding up and down to the config. Which does not work for me. It is a problem because most of my colleagues are using Ubuntu. Only few computers are using Windows or other Linux distro.
Update with applied changes
When applied changes from @heynnema, here is what is printed in console https://pastebin.com/DkjHguqE when connecting via terminal. After that, ping git.internal.mycompany.org
doesn't work.
Another found facts:
- When I added
redirect-gateway def1 bypass-dhcp
into config, then my public IP is IP of the server, but still cannot ping URL above. - When imported config into the UI of Ubuntu as mentioned https://askubuntu.com/a/1188022/972420, ping works until I uncheck
Use this connection only for traffic within this network
.
How to stop snapd from auto-updating?
I've just installed Ubuntu 18.04. After a few minutes I noticed my bandwidth is remarkably low. I installed nethogs
and realized /usr/lib/snapd/snapd
is consuming my internet.
Questions:
- How can I disable it? It really stops me from using the internet.
- Can I disable snap package system when installing Ubuntu?
Thanks a lot,
No Wifi Adapter Found - MSI Modern 14 A10M
I've looking an answer to this problem for days now and I can't seem to find it. I installed Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on my MSI Modern 14 A10M and it won't recognize my iwlwifi wifi adapter. The main problem I have is that some of the solutions I've found I can't try because this laptop has no ethernet ports, so I can't try installing packages that would fix it. I've tried installing Ubuntu 19.10 - where the WiFi adapter works just fine - but the main problem is that it has lot of trouble with temp sensors (overheating) and battery life won't go beyond an hour or two. Can anyone help me get a solution where I don't need to sudo install packages because there's no internet at all on this device
I have a bootable USB, during installation the adaptar wasn't recognized either so I don't know if there's anything that I can do with it to troubleshoot it.
Thanks in advance
EDIT: This problem doesn't happen when updating to 20.04
Network sporadicatlly freezes while performing a wifi-scan Ubuntu 20.04
After upgrading from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 (network-manager version 1.22.10-1ubuntu2.1), I am getting sporadic WiFi network connectivity. I'm using the r88x2bu network driver from the rtl88x2bu-dkms package. I can be browsing and suddenly the connection drops for a minute or two, and then it eventually reconnects. The problem is so persistent that it makes simple tasks such as browsing almost impossible. I tried exploring different paths to debug this problem.
I don't think this problem is related to a DDos, since all of my other devices in the network are receiving about the same amount of incoming traffic.
Exploring the NetworkManager and wpa-supplicant debug logs, I see that when the issue arises, the logs look as follows. The network-manager starts a wifi-scan and network requests are blocked until the wifi-scan is successfully done.

My best guess is that this problem is a bug in the new NetworkManager, probably a blocking thread while network-manager performs a routine wifi-scan. I'm happy to provide any additional information that will help resolve this issue.
Ubuntu 18.04 does not see Windows Network
I have a small home network, running as a WORKGROUP with the same name. When I go to browse the network from my Ubuntu 18.04 machine from the "Files" app it sees the "Windows Network" but when I click on that, it returns "Folder is Empty". I have an old HP server running Ubuntu 15.04 (I know I should upgrade) server with several shares, and it sees none of them, I have a couple of Linux (one Ubuntu, one Mint) laptops running in the house, and nothing.
I have installed Samba, and edited it to include the "client max protocol = NT1" line as suggested in "https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2390873" with no success.
I would desperately like to be able to access these shares as they have content I am working on at the moment, but this forces me to you my Win10 machine.

Ubuntu avahi-daemon cannot find "raspberrypi.local"
I am using a ubuntu 16.04 LTS laptop. I have a raspberry pi zero I flashed raspbian onto. I enabled ssh on the raspberry pi, and set it up as an ethernet gadget so I can ssh into it from a micro-usb connection. I can ssh into the pi from my friends macbook, so the raspberry software is configured correctly.
The avahi daemon is up and running:
$ sudo service avahi-daemon status● avahi-daemon.service - Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Stack Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/avahi-daemon.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled) Active: active (running) since Thu 2018-01-04 14:22:11 EST; 42min ago Main PID: 4114 (avahi-daemon) Status: "avahi-daemon 0.6.32-rc starting up." But I can not ping raspberrypi.local or raspberry.local.
I don't know what that 172.18.94.241 address is, but I can ping it but not ssh it, so I don't think it's the pi.
ifconfig
does not show a raspberry pi connection:

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the avahi daemon, but it did not work. What am I doing wrong?
Ubuntu 18.04 WiFi Networks are not displaying even though there are 3 nearby
I recently installed Ubuntu 18.04 on my 2009 mac mini. I used a bootable flash drive and all is well. Initially, WiFi adapter where not found, but after going into the Software & Updates > Additional Drivers and installing and using the Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source from bcwl-kernel-source.
However there are no visible WiFi networks even though there are at least three around me as my phone and laptop are connected to them.
I have tried to reinstall the kernel, reinstall the network-manager, and dist-upgrade. Thank you for your help.

Renew DHCP lease in systemd-networkd
I have my eth0
interface configured for DHCPv4 via netplan
:

How do I tell systemd-networkd
to renew my DHCP lease? I know with dhclient
it's as simple as dhclient -r eth0 && dhclient eth0
, as explained in many other answers on this site, but how do I do it for systemd-networkd
?

OpenVPN does not connect via network manager plugin
I am trying to connect to my OpenVPN server via the network manager plugin (network-manager-openvpn), after importing the ovpn config file. However, I receive a time-out error:

connecting via the console
sudo openvpn --config .openvpn/vpnt.ovpn
works perfectly well.
I have no idea what I am missing -- and grateful for any ideas. :)
Low Bluetooth signal with one antenna, low wifi with the other
I (like many others) am having problems setting up a bluetooth headset. Connecting it is unreliable and even when connecting, audio is choppy, laggy and it cuts out entirely if I merely put my hand over the headset bluetooth emitter. Blueman reports "poor" signal strength (less than 30%) even when centimetres away from my laptop. This reminded me another issue I had with connectivity: my wifi module (rtl8723be) was getting low signal and had to change the antenna number with ant_sel=2.
So the kicker is that if I select the antenna #1 with
sudo modprobe -r rtl8723besudo modprobe -v rtl8723be ant_sel=2
then bluetooth works (almost) flawlessly with strong signal, no lag and quality audio. But, of course, that leads me to have essentially no wifi, which is not acceptable. Now that I identify the issue, the obvious solution would be to somehow use both antennas, or antenna 1 for bluetooth and antenna 2 for wifi. Is there any way to do so?

How do I access microk8s externally exposed service ip over network?
I am running a microk8s instance on Ubuntu server as a vanilla install, configured with MetalLB to dynamically allocate 10.0.2.1 to 10.0.2.200 and the Nginx ingress controller enabled. I've installed the wordpress helm chart on this instance (https://github.com/bitnami/charts/tree/master/bitnami/wordpress/#installing-the-chart) with the following command:
helm install wordpress \ --set wordpressUsername=admin \ --set wordpressPassword=password \ --set mariadb.mariadbRootPassword=secretpassword \ --set ingress.enabled=true \ --set ingress.hostname=wordpress.internal \ bitnami/wordpress
Service is up and running successfully, and when I run
kubectl describe services wordpress
I get the following:
Name: wordpressNamespace: defaultLabels: app.kubernetes.io/instance=wordpress app.kubernetes.io/managed-by=Helm app.kubernetes.io/name=wordpress helm.sh/chart=wordpress-9.3.10Annotations: meta.helm.sh/release-name: wordpress meta.helm.sh/release-namespace: defaultSelector: app.kubernetes.io/instance=wordpress,app.kubernetes.io/name=wordpressType: LoadBalancerIP: 10.152.183.73LoadBalancer Ingress: 10.0.2.1Port: http 80/TCPTargetPort: http/TCPNodePort: http 31799/TCPEndpoints: 10.1.70.14:8080Port: https 443/TCPTargetPort: https/TCPNodePort: https 30087/TCPEndpoints: 10.1.70.14:8443Session Affinity: NoneExternal Traffic Policy: ClusterEvents: Type Reason Age From Message ---- ------ ---- ---- ------- Normal IPAllocated 32m metallb-controller Assigned IP "10.0.2.1" Normal nodeAssigned 6m41s (x3 over 31m) metallb-speaker announcing from node "k8s"
When I am SSH'ed onto the node where microk8s is installed, the instance responds as I would expect:
curl 10.0.2.1<!DOCTYPE html><html class="no-js" lang="en-US"><head><meta charset="UTF-8"><meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"><link rel="profile" href="https://gmpg.org/xfn/11"><title>User's Blog! – Just another WordPress site</title>
However, when I run the same command over my networked Macbook, I'm unable to get a response:

How to tell Ubuntu that a USB device is a wireless adapter?
I have a USB wireless network adapter that I'm trying to use with Ubuntu. It is being detected by lsusb
, but not by lshw -C network
or ip a
. Unless I missed something obvious, there doesn't seem to be any documentation for when the device is not recognized as an adapter at all.
Here is the entry for the adapter from lsusb
, the only place I could find it listed:
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 0bda:8812 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8812AU 802.11a/b/g/n/ac 2T2R DB WLAN Adapter
If there is any important information that I did not share, let me know and I will edit it in.
